This morning, as we begin to wrap up a crazy week, I want to highlight two of the paragraphs from Monday’s post.
We are in no way opposed to international adoption. International adoption is a dream we continue to hold dear. We are, however, opposed to the falsifying of files for the creation of orphan status when such status cannot be documented. We are opposed to the manipulation of children and their birth families for the purposes of creating orphans. We are opposed to governments who would rubber stamp orphans into existence and not allow foreign agencies to question facts presented in an orphan’s file. We are opposed to adoption agencies who simply ignore warnings of fraud because they can hide behind the offending country’s legal documentation. We are adamantly opposed to all forms of child trafficking.
This list of what we can stand opposed to concisely outlines many of the glaring problems within international adoption today. These are real problems. If anything impressed me this week, it would be this: out of the thousands and thousands of you who took the time to read Monday’s post, literally hundreds of you have been impacted by one of more of the issues listed. You have called, emailed, texted, messaged, and commented to me. You wanted me to know I am not alone. I want you to know the same.
We know from our own bruises and griefs what we are opposed to now. We know what we stand against because we feel it viscerally in our souls. But the world does not change as a result of wounds unless we are able to turn them into something constructive. So, what are we FOR? What do we stand in support of?
We, as citizens of the United States of America, a country founded on liberty and justice and soaked in the blood of the war against slavery and abuse, must not allow ourselves to victimize children. If we are truly for adoption, for family, and for children then we must also be for accountability. Please help us give these children a voice. Please help us protect these vulnerable children.
We are FOR adoption. This much is clear. Adoption is a beautiful way to build a family. It is one of the great ways to reach out and care for orphans.
We are FOR family. Whether building, supporting, strengthening, or stabilizing, we stand with families. We are FOR the adoptive family who goes through the roller coaster process to bring home sons and daughters. We are FOR birth families who need a little more help so they can care for their children.
We are FOR children. They are our future. They are God’s gift. They are the funniest little humans you will ever meet. They are long nights of running noses and tears. They need us. Their needs vary widely.
We are FOR accountability. We must hold ourselves accountable for the information we have. We must hold our agencies accountable as well. Many who work in adoption do so with complete integrity. But if you find concrete evidence that your adoption agency participated in unethical and fraudulent adoptions, as ours certainly did, you must hold them accountable.
Allow me to go a step further and address my Christian friends. Christians, we cannot allow these abuses to take place in the name of Jesus. It is one thing to know bad things happen in the world. It is another thing entirely to look the other way because the people or organizations involved claim Christ. We must remember both halves of James 1:27!
PS – If you contacted me, please be patient with my response time. There are a whole lot of you…and only one of me!
